RAF UPPER HEYFORD - AIRCRAFT DECONTAMINATION - WASH STATION - MAY 2011 REPORT
Carrying on my surveying of the base:thumb
Here is another in depth report of a part of a Cold War Iconic base that makes up RAF Upper Heyford:thumb
The Aircraft Decontamination Wash is formed up of a series of buildings, ranging from the De-con hanger, where the F-111 aircraft would be moved into a hanger and throughly washed down to rid it of decontaminates, such as radiation fallout etc. This was a simple affair in relation to washing the aircraft down!
The cleaning of the contaminated water however was a complex business and involved several buildings and filter beds to rid the water of contaminates.

Unlike the HAS shelters, the De-con Hanger was very plain, and could take only one aircraft at a time.

Rear of the De-con Hanger, the building to the right contained a smaller De-con, container for smaller items, most of it is wrecked though:(

Alongside and housed in a smaller building is the water pumping equipment, that drained the contaminated water from the hanger into the filter beds located in another building.

All the equipment on site was maintained by MOD staff - PSA. USAF personnel were not allowed to tamper with anything:?

Inside the filter beds were housed in these brick lined tanks, which treated the contaminated water before, being pumped out again, into a separate holding tank before being returned to the De-con hanger for re-use.

Not one of the most exciting buildings on the flying Field! But an essential one never the less:coffee
Thanks for looking:thumb
