The exact date of the church was built is unknown, however it is thought to have been built in the 14th century and built by the Tyas family becuase of their grave stones located in the floor of the church. Historians believe that St. Marys was a chapel for a mediaeval manour house - the foundations have been located in the surrounding field. The battle of Towton which brought an end to the war of roses in 1461 occured not too far away from the church. It has been said that over 10,000 men were killed in the battle and the stream (Cock Beck) that flows nearby was red with the blood of the soldiers.
