Arrow North Wales slate mine, Gwynedd, December 2009

First pictures i have stuck up on here chaps .....So be kind

I headed up to this mine last Christmas with a small group of friends (about 30 of us had a landrovering weekend,And a small group of us have an interest in industrial archeology and exploring)

I would rather keep the location un named ,although some will recognise it possibly from the pictures,The nature of the site is a little sensitive at the moment as there is "untopping" work being carried out,and there are issues with unstable sections resulting from the blasting etc .
There has also been a lot of damage caused by the removal of "scrap" by either undesirable types or ( more likely people associated with the company that owns the site) .

I first visited this place about 30 years ago with my old man and the changes i have witnessed over a period of years have been heartbreaking ,and amount to sheer vandalism the like of which i have seldom seen thankfully.
Back then the lights still came on at the shift start and extinguished at shift end .The workshops looked literally like they had just finished work for "snap break",There is still a lot to see but how much longer it will be there for ????
Bittersweet visit this one was for me .

    Pictures ......

    Inside Control bridge over incline

    Pikied "rotary AC/DC converter"

    Multiple Oldham lamp charging rack

    Slate planing table

View along the mills line shafting

    Incline "man carriage"

"graffiti" at side of rotary dressing machine

Roof in poor repair ....specially when it was snowing

    Greaves Rotary dresser

Ruston Hornsby diesel loco ( a good friend of mine owned one of the other ones that worked here ,and spent a goodly amount of time restoring it )

I think i have some more somewhere if anyone is interested ??

Apologies for the brevity and lack of location etc ......

And if i have cocked in any way can someone let me know please

We did a short trip underground Nick,
But no one was pouring fruit based drinks about so we turned back ;-)) ,
Actually we found a lot of recently disturbed rock ,and a lot of evidence of large machines having worked very recently and we were short of time so didn't descend into the deeper older workings sadly .......Maybe next time

That look a great place mate, and well photographed and love the information that goes along with it too. Thanks for sharing.

From an admin point of view:

In regards to the name, we don't do anonymous really on here (this forum) for UK sites (unlike a lot of world wide places), however by providing a general name, maybe a town, or county and a date then most of the time that is good enough with sensitive sites. At no point do we need a postcode
Also you, or anyone else has no obligation to ever post anything that you don't feel happy to post. What you post is in complete control by you.

    Appreciated and understood .....
I am happy to share the pictures if only from the point of view of showing the needless vandalism that has occurred,
However the situation of the site is such that it is very sensitive (at the moment)with the process of being re-worked and as such parts of it are a live site .
If i could include Gwynedd and December 18th 2009 would that help keep within forum guide lines ???
