RAF HUNSDON – HERTS – NOV – 2010.
This second world war Airfield opened in 1941.
It was constructed with a hard standing perimiter track whith 16 blister type hangers
and a cross over runway.
The site was serviced by 448 huts and buildings ,from cinema to fire station etc.
Many of which have long since gone.
But if you look hard enough there are a few tobe found..
Alot of its defensive positions and Pill boxes have survive as well as its under ground battle headquaters & also a trench system which I had the misfortune to discover by falling in it whilst hopping through low level, leaf covered brambles & gorse Lol.
A sketch map of the Airfield.
It operated in a night fighter role..& was equipped with a directional lighting system
The most common aircraft to use this site were The Hurricanes ,Havoc and Mosquito .
A Mosquito.
One of many well known missions from this Airfield was when 17 mosquitos took off on
“Operation Jericho”
In which they bombed the walls of a Gestapo prison in France holding Resistance fighter awaitig execution, allowing many to escape.
To those who never returned, rest in peace.
The Battle headquaters
The inside has at present about 3 feet of water and as with no waders with me gave it a miss
Trench system in the surrounding wood land.
A few buildings that survive.
