Arrow Mauchline Caves, Scotland, July 2010

Not really Urbex, more like Rurbex - Too interesting not to share.
On the Eglinton Estate, right beside the river Ayr, There are some tunnels and caves cut through the sandstone cliffs.
Yes these have been chiseled cut and dug out by hand.
I can find very little information or history on these, we were working on the estate and a local told us about the tunnels, he told us they were made to create a track for driving horse and carriages along.
They're potentially many hundereds of years old.
We couldn't resist taking the JEEP through the tunnels....

Caves, top one is entered through a doorway up the hill to the left

    Spider webs decorate the walls

Yup, chiseled out by hand, it must have been an EPIC undertaking!

Possibly not quite as epic as the job creating these!

    Window to the river

    Gap between the 2 tunnels

    Looking back through tunnel 2

    Tight!

Also a curving track cut into the rock with a bridge over

A really beautiful place to wander, with other such attractions such as a secret garden and Aincient bridges over the river.
Shame its not open to the public - I didn't tell you these secrets!

    Nice shots
Like the jeep shots. They were made for exploring
