Exclamation Video of a ROC Post Siren in action.

All ROC Posts were equiped with a Secomak Type 447 Hand Cranked Air Raid Siren to warn the general public of any danger from air attack, fallout, or to let people know of the all clear.

This is where the common phrase 'attack warning red' comes from, meaning take shelter, air attack/fallout danger is imminent.

Here is a short video clip recorded by BB from the forum showing me giving a short demonstration of attack warning red on my siren at Chop Gate ROC Post.

It was only short but you get the idea, the pitch is changed by the speed you wind the handle and AWR is the rising and falling note. It is quite difficult to maintain and also expectionally loud - you can see people starting to move away haha.

Anyway enjoy and thanks to BB for the vid

Just to correct one part of your post Krypton, the warning for the approach of fallout was called 'fallout warning black', the 'attack warning red' was only for the approach of enemy aircraft or missiles. The sirens would not be used for fallout warnings, just maroons.

    Hope that explains things.

Did any ROC post actually have one of these left inside after the MOD sold them back? all I find is the bloody wooden boxes!

Nah they were all removed as far as i am aware.

In many cases - the crates were left because they cant fit out of the hatch unless you take the ladders off.
