Tetley's Brewery - June 2011
Visited with Fowle and Clough
This place needs very little in the way of an introduction to most people... The brewery closed little over a week ago with the loss of stupid amounts of jobs, redundancies have been happening at the brewery at a steady pace for nearly 2 years now as they prepared to close the site. The admin block is still active and the office staff still work there full time and will be doing for quite a while as far as we know!
People have talked and talked about it, walked round it, said it wasn't possible. As you know, it was done by Mexico75 and we were hot on his heels, this place needed doing!
History:
The original brewery was opened on the current site in 1822. Parts of the original buildings still stand and extensions have been built as late as 2006.
The closure of the brewery by Carlsberg was announced on 5 November 2008. The brewery finally closed its doors on 17 June 2011.
Carlsberg tried to redeploy some staff throughout the group but 179 staff did lose their jobs. Production of Tetley beer will be moved to Northampton.
The brewery produced around 185 million pints of Tetley's every year. In addition to this brewery there was a distribution centre in nearby Tingley. There are no plans to close this depot.
