    Arrow Limestone Kilns, Whitburn, 4-9-11

    After years of driving past this place i finally decided to have a look.
    This place is surpisingly big once you get right up to it, i have to come back when i have more time to have a better explore.

    A little bit of History;
    Limestone has been quarried at Marsden for many years. The stone was used in some notable local buildings, including Whitburn windmill.

    These limekilns were built in the 1870s, taking advantage of Whitburn colliery which provided fuel for burning the limestone to make quick or unslaked lime (calcium oxide). Quicklime was used to neutralise soil, and to make cement and concrete. It was also important for the steel and chemical industries.

    All thats left is the newer Kilns on the left which are the Big round ones and the older kilns on the right which is the Brig Grey rectangle thing

    Thanks for looking

    They should kind of be preserved really they are interesting to look at. Ive drove past loads of times and never looked at them either. Theres a lighthouse just down the road owned and managed by national trust it gives an interesting hour.
