Arrow Barracks K TU Berlin Tour.....

Barracks K was originally built by the Nazis as a barracks and training ground for their cavalry. After the war this area (Potsdam, west of Berlin) fell into the Soviet Occupation Zone, and consequently became part of East Germany. Owing to the tensions of the cold war the Soviets chose to repurpose this building for their own needs, a military force both on the edge of West Berlin and near to mainland West Germany’s borders as well, this was an incredibly strategic location. Of course the Cold War never got hot, and the Soviets abandoned Barracks K in the early 1990s.

Not wanting to pour cold water on your excellent report but a bit of correct history wants pointing out.First of all Potsdam is very much in East Germany and is no where near to the West German borders and the Cold War did get very hot, remember the stand off at Checkpoint Charlie. To get to Potsdam from Berlin you can cross the famous spy bridge where exchanges were made(Glienicker Brücke). The U2 pilot Gary Powers was exchanged at the Bridge of Spies.Very close to this barracks is another must see, semi hotel come eating house but with some grass covered bunkers in the grounds. There are literally dozens of old Russian sites in a small area fairly close, still many old tank traps buried in under growth and many just sitting there in the open.

Off topic,if it is still open,an English Tea Shop in Potsdam and the little version of the Angel of the North sits at the end of the garden of the guy who owned Joop

Overhead shot of the site, I've marked the boundary as I know it although I suspect that it was slightly larger at one time (extending to the north and northeast)..

I thought I had a detailed plan (in the style of the Beelitz building plan) but I can't find it at the moment. AbandonedBerlin has descriptions of most of the best sites in Berlin and surrounding areas, including public transport details.

There's a lot of discussion about the swastika, one view is that it can't be geuine because the Soviets had a tendency to remove/destroy such obvious Nazi imagery in the buidings they occupied, another view is that it can't be a modern film prop addition because the swastika is illegal in Germany and any permission to erect a replica would surely include a clause to ensure it was removed as soon as possible.
