Well suppose they would say more what was you doing, though to be fair you would be pretty dumb to fall right through the shaft
And its not military now, once stood down it was just given back to the land owners so yeh if anything happened it would be between them and the person in trouble.

I know you'd have to be dumb, but I know of a case where a guy hopped over a wall onto private land for a piss when he was drunk, broke his ankle on a piece of loose paving and sued, won a fortune from the landowner. I can imagine an unlocked ROC post would prove a complete nightmare for a landowner should someone get hurt...

    Yes.

Luckilly i have only ever had one accident at Chop Gate which was a minor head injury.

We have all visitors sign a waiver of liabilty and release - which probablys accounts for nothing in the legal world.

If something happened down here, i can imagine the owner would be held responsible for not having it secured, thats why many have the ladders removed, welded or capped with concrete.

Krypton, you will need to get a radio licence to use the Burndepts, they run on a band still in use by the MOD and as such are not legal to use. If you convert them to 2m (144-145mhz) then you can work
away with them (A radio licence is not very hard at all to get, just do the exam with your local radio club). I took mine 2 years ago and now Portadown has its own RSGB special event call-sign 'GB1ROC'.

Do you know if the radios you have are converted? There is a civilian version of the BE525 on eBay at the moment that is on 2m and it would suit you down to the ground.

Do not be tempted to operate the radios illegally, Ofcom and other amateur radios 'hams' will not hesitate in making themselves known to you very quickly.

If you need any help or advice concerning the radios then let me know.

Yeah, its ucking huge! Think of a server rack only with big orange radios instead of servers.

Only ever seen one of them in the flesh before and that was at the RGHQ in Ballymena.
