Arrow RAF St Twynnells R6 Rotar Station - March 08

    Another blast from the past.

Visited With Dreamworx, Pob (SW one) Dangerous Dave and one of daves mates.

Meeting up with the boys early on sunday we headed into deepest west wales, where men are men and sheep are nervous. The weather was truly bizare thick blizard like horrizontal snow followed by beautiful summers sun and then freezing hale. When we arrived and tucked our cars away in a quiet corner it began to snow quite heavily which was a lucky break as it sheilded us from the psyco farmer who owns the field the station lies in. By the time we got to the bunker the gorund was thick with snow and i was regreting not deploying the tesco carrier bag welly boots i had conceived back at the car.

St Twynnell's Rotar was one of a network of modern radar defenses conceived in the early 1950's as a response to the increased threat posed by soviet bomber forces. The Target date for its completetion was september 1953 but it is one of two rotor stations listed in the project file without a completion dates. The manufacture's installation plates on most of the plant remaining is dated 1954.

St Twynells was never fully operational in 1952 most of the radar installations planned for the site were cancelled and only they type 80 control radar remained in plan but this too was cancelled in june 1953 when St Twynnells dropped to the bottom of the priority list of stations to be fitted out. only mobile type 11 radar was ever used at st twynells despite the completed radar bases which still sit across the road from the rotor bunker.

St Twynells is one of 5 R6 bunkers which are two level concrete bunkers constructed above ground although it seems like you are underground when i side your actually not. Inside the bunker is in quite good condition original paint remains on the walls and much of the original plant is complete and still in situ the aircon fans also still move smoothly on their bearings. On the gorund floor most of the raised floors have been removed leaving the aircon ducts exposed which makes an interesting indoor climbing frame. When we left the snow had stopped the ground was clear and the farmer could see us resulting in a land rover chase over the field and us us being branded a bunch of cheeky f&%kers in high pitched west walian.
