Tarbock Island Culverts/Drain - Liverpool - April 2012 -

tarbock island or interchange as its also known is a roundabout at junction 6 of the M62 which provides links from the M57 motorway to the M62 north to south ,east to west ,up and down etc etc.

.....and thats it for the roundabout apart from it had improvement work done on it a few yrs back.

however the roundabout has a brook running under it,so decided to check it out after seeing water coming out of an outfall down an embankment a few weeks back when i exited the M62 on the way back from another mooch.

i first tried it at night with the mule but it proved too dodgy so returned in the daytime with kevsy21.

its pretty much boring concrete box culvertry that comes out into the open for a bit under the various carrigeways (6 times), but we found a side tunnel near the end and decided to also check that out, its a surface water drain for the roundabout we think with small inspection chambers, again pretty bland concrete rcp.

we kicked things off at the top of stretton way ,this is where logwood mill brook meets chapel brook, and from what ive been told also known as the "ratty"....something to do with it being full of rats, although we never seen a single one.


kev decided to wade up the brook first and see if it was doable or not however he never returned for some time...worried he had sunk in the thick mud i decided to wade up the brook myself in just my shoes to see where he was.



after finally seeing him i shouted up

"i thought you sunk kev"

kev...."nahh ive been waiting for you"

"my stuff is in the car"

kev....."ahh shit i thought i left you the car keys anyway its doable"

so with that i decided to press on without a tripod or waders....good times.

we found a side pipe in the one of the culverts and decided to check it out.....kev going in first.

further on up the brook we come to daggers bridge this is where the brook is joined by foxes brook after that it becomes ochre brook.




The C.C. is all that remains of Lancashire C.C. which had a habit of inscribing bridge names on the parapet, as here. Whether the 42 is an identification number or refers to a date of construction (?1842) I have no idea. Interestingly, the road is called Dacres Bridge Lane I have no means of knowing which is 'right' and/or the original spelling.


This was formerly the A5080 which was realigned when tarbock Island was constructed,the brook flows underneath the bridge and back under the M57 and then becomes ochre brook,now closed off at either end it acts as a service road for contractors.
