Building in Danger of Collapse (IDOC) and Derelict (“Crap Hole”), Hull, Report 05/11/08

Hello, following on from my moderately successful venture at the High Street cluster of Derelicts (John Good & Sons…etc) I was in need of a new site to work towards. Unfortunately due to a little known storm surge (and North sea country flood warning in place due to weather) most of the days since the last trip had to be no goes due to poor weather.

Fortunately due to stupid assignments that needed to be done, I decided to go out in the rain instead and scope out a more famous urbex site. On my way through the industrial site I chanced upon a (now small) site with easy access, I had a quick scope of the site as I walked down the road and continued to my original destination.

    IDOC: (In Danger of Collapse)

Eventually the new site got the better of me and I decided I would head back there and attempt to mooch about inside. Access was easy even if the noise was atrocious due to debris littering the entire site. After a few minutes I found myself in a small section of what remained of the front of the building. I fumbled in the darkness for my camera bag that was hidden under my trench coat and realised “Oh **** I didn’t bring a torch”. Deciding I would somehow have to use the small LCD display’s light as my only active light and the occasional flash from my camera to get a gist of the sections I pressed on.

I took a shot of the room to my right and noticed that there was a ladder!

Reaching the Ladder I turned and took a shot of the previous room:

Scaling the ladder (With some awkwardness) I noticed that there was a mini ledge to the left which hosted some pipes:

To my right at the top of the ladder I fired off another random photo and caught sight of a door:

Treading lightly along the little wooden platform, I managed to reach the door but not before I had 6 thoughts ranging from “ZoMg the floor is going to go” to “Gah was that a big ass electric cable that just touched my boot, oh no its just a pigeon”. I got past the door and fired off several shots and realised I was in a Electrical room with things like Circuit Breaker boxes and Fuse trays:

I turned and saw the room had a old light switch:

Trembling as I went down the ladder back to the floor, I decided to head out into the “clearing” and see what remained of the middle of the front of the site. Upon walking around I noticed that there had been a collapse at some point after the middle had been partially demolished:

Walking around the collapse I went through a side entrance noticing that the metal beams that had once supported the roof of the now gone section had been reused to help support the back of the site:

Pushing on I tried to reach the back of the site but overgrown plants and small tree things as well as other collapses blocked my way to what looked like a open metal door:

Not wanting to attempt that bit (even though it would be 2/3 of the remaining site) I went back to the clearing to get into the other side of the front and noticed more metal beams:

As I entered this section there was a series of “woops” as dozens of pigeons got startled and flew off, leaving me ducking for cover in the corner of the room. Regaining my composure I stood up and fired off a shot to understand the layout and noticed another ladder at the back:

Each step I took panicked more and more pigeons forcing me to squat walk my way down the site in fear of the mutually assured destruction that would occur if a Pigeon/ bird strike should occur, eventually I managed to stand and fire off a shot at some windows only to find they had been sealed/ taped up at some point:

Walking around the wall to see the room on the other side of the sealed windows I noticed several electrical boxes:

Hearing more pigeons I looked up and noticed this room still had some of its ceiling items in place:

Heading back out I decided to investigate the second ladder, but decided against climbing incase the pigeons attacked me but noticed there was a gap/ hole at the top of the ladder to something else (Possibly a Electric Sub room):

Turning the corner I headed towards a buzzing sound, scaring some more pigeons in the process that promptly (or at least sounded like) they collided into the walls when they took off this time forcing me to leap back. I quickly snapped several shots and found out

the humming was coming from a functional substation/ Electric/ Mains supply room (This is probably what stopped the demo of the site)

Someone had stacked debris on the window at some point:

Leaving this site I snapped a shot in a very dark room and crossed the road to another site:

    Unknown Building, Dubbed “Crap Hole”

The first section of the site I encountered was a wash/toilet room (why are they always the first things :-( . In this section I noticed that some homeless person had been living or staying here at some point, the shower room had been taken over and blankets and sheets where placed in the bottom of the shower like a bed.

I decided to get the obligatory crapper shot as per law, one throne was destroyed the other still stood:

Heading back out I went around the side and went through the middle of the Crap Hole site:

Moving into the new section I went to the front and noticed the reception like area:

In the other part of the Reception was a table littered with ring binders and lids and a weird glass (smashed) section on the table with a vent leading out of it:

Heading through what was left I encountered numerous small rooms and a final decent sized room:

With my battery now running low and with no other light I decided to leave and head home, upon leaving the site the haggard windows of a nearby other site caught my attention….

Looks like you had a good time in there, pigeons can give you a real shock sometimes when they just fly into walls and windows.

That second place looks shitey though, even for Hull :-)

Nice one mate, seems like an enjoyable time was had. Nicely written report too, nice to "see" the site as you did. Good one.
