Arrow Tyne Cyclist and Pedestrian Tunnel, Newcastle - Dec 2012

Was in the area, thought...what the hell, lets have a look

Not derelict, but has a nice heritage background.

    Bit of History.

The Tyne Cyclist and Pedestrian Tunnel was Britain's first purpose-built cycling tunnel. It runs under the River Tyne between the districts of Howdon and Jarrow, and was opened in 1951. Originally costing £833,000 to build. The layout consists of two tunnels running in parallel, one for pedestrians with a 3.2m diameter, and a larger 3.7m diameter tunnel for cyclists. The tunnels are nearly 60 years old! and are Grade II listed structures.

Both tunnels are 900 feet in length and are 40 feet below the river bed.
At each end, the tunnels are connected to surface buildings by two escalators and single lifts. The escalators are still the original models from 1951, when installed they were the highest single-rise escalators in the world, with a vertical rise of 26 meters and a length of 61 m.

The tunnels are currently undergoing a £6,000,000 refurbishment.

    On with the pics.

The only thing to do with good advice is pass it on. It is never any use to oneself.
