    Arrow Fairmile Hospital, Moulsford, 4/1/09

Fairmile hospital opened in 1870 and had a 132 year long career in caring for people with mental health problems. The site was purchased in in 1866 for the sum of £8,317 4s 9p. The architect Charles Henry Howells of Lancaster Place, London designed the asylum which was built at a total cost of £68,000.

Provided in the intial design was a main building to accomodate 500 patients, Offices, a superintendent's house, Lodge cottage, engineers and baliffs cottage, dairy farm and chapel. The hospital was originally named The Berkshire, Reading and Newbury Lunatic Asylum but other names followed, Moulsford Asylum, Berkshire mental hospital and finally Fairmile Hospital which was adopted in the late 1940's

The first patients were admitted on the 30th of September 1870 and its intial population was 248 (116 Males and 132 Females) cared for by a staff of 44. The patient poulation increased to a peek of over 1,000 in the 1940's before declining through the years of comunity care to only 220 when it closed in 2003 who were looked after by a staff of 400.

Visited with Tumbels, Winchester and Lula , on a bloody cold day temeture dropped to -7 on the way and it was frezzing all the way round, I think we were all slightly underwhelmed by fairmile after the years of high security its still fairly trashed but the wood lined ward was worth it as were the patient scrach marks on the back of an original seclusion cell door in a ward which was very reminisant of Cane hill. Didnt see any signs of security though the guard was heard walking about outside there was also an alarm type beeping going off near the reception so we were quick in there. and who ever catalogued this as a corridor plan was nuts theres hardly a corridor in the place just a maze of wards and dayrooms leading off each other
