Arrow The Red Flag At Richard's, Aberdeen 2008 - ARCHIVE

Hose weaving at Broadford Works was one of the range of products associated with Richard's textile works. Founded on the Maberly Street site sometime about 1808 the business started life as a flax-linen manufacturer.

In the 1830s the business was taken over by John Baker Richards, a London merchant. Under his ownership and name the company expanded through the 19th century. By the 1880s eight steam engines drove the plant and some 3,000 millhands were employed.

The company manufactured linen sheeting, towelling sail canvas, tent cloth and hose web. Because of lack of profitability the company decided in 1980 to sell off the hose weaving side of the business. This led to the loss of 400 jobs.

The Hosepipe Tower dominates the Aberdeen skyline...
I love the concrete structure. Unfortuantley you can't get inside it, but that doesn't stop you going up the outside!
