Arrow Church at the lost village of Lead, N Yorks, March '09

    Here's one for yer mom...

St Mary's Lead church, near Towton, north Yorkshire. The village of Lead has gone, and all that remains is this fourteenth century church.

The church is deconsecrated, and is only used for one service a year. It is very small.

I loved the worn stone altar.

The stone flagged floor has tombstones set into it.

The village of Lead has gone, and a few bumps remain in the grass. A heavy oak door keeps out the sheep and the cold wind.

    Carnations

Over ten thousand men were killed nearby during the battle of Towton in 1461, which ended the Civil War. The Cock Beck is said to have run red with blood. Today, it was just brown.

its one of my favourite little buildings. I like the history in there.

The yorkists beat the lancastrians on this occasion with Henry VI fleeing north towards scotland.

The date was 29th march 1461 and it left 28000 dead.

Cheers Ernie. That is an astonishing number of dead people. It must have been such a horrible battle. Interesting link too mate.

28000 is an astonishing number of people to die in a battle in those days
