Arrow The arches at Parlington Hall, April '09

    Just outside Leeds...

The 90 metre Dark Arch of Parlington is not really that dark.

Light from four air vents does illiminate the tunnel, built in 1813-1814. It was originally a carraigeway, and later a railtrack was laid through the tunnel.

It was built using the cut and cover method, and designed so traffic could pass along the lane without disturbing the lifestyle of the Gascoigne family of nearby Parlington Hall.

Many people choose not to pass through it, choosing to follow the path, and join the ha-ha further along.

    Another arch at Parlington...
The Triumphal Arch was built in the 1780's, and carries the inscription Liberty in N.America Triumphant MDCCLXXXIII, referring to the American war of Independence. It is believed to be the only memorial in the UK to commemorate a foreign victory.
