Arrow Greensfield Locomotive Works, Gateshead. 11/05/09

It seemed a lovely day for an explore so myself and a friend decided to head of to this place after it was spotted by Cerberus, from NEUE. Following in his dusty footsteps wasnt hard... it was thick with it in this place! Most recent occupants seem to be Belway homes, as it is their estate they have built on what was once one of the last major locomotive builders in the north east.
Built for the North Eastern Mainline in 1856, the imposing building you are about to see was once the blacksmiths shed, and the boilers for the locomotives were made in here.

Can anyone tell me why the bricks on the floor here are made of wood? They fit together like bricks and that was what i thought they were until i had a closer look!
This shed, along with the rest of the yard was built in 1856, and used as a manufacturing yard up unti 1910 when work was transferred to Derby and the yard operated as a repair yard. In the 30's it was almost mothballed but the advent of ww2 kept the yard in service right up until the 50's when diesel locos were repaired here.
Last occupants seem to have been Cardianal Triumph... a garage that seemed to specialise in old, british sports cars.

Anyhow, enough waffle and on to the pics.......
The light in the workshops on the ground floor was just gorgeous, the massive arches and huge windows were just looovely!
So, a few moody B+W pics are in order i think........

A lovely little find, and a very dusty explore!!!!
