    Arrow Steetly Magnesite 31/05/2009

Visited with Skin, Sandman and Doozer. I had been here before and regarded this place as a fun post-apocalyptic experience. You can climb the rubble and hide amongst mounds of what was once a building. It has changed since I had been last showing more signs of destruction and decay. Still, although not as awesome in scale as Chernobyl, Steetly Magnesite provides you with a little slice of end times closer to home and for most of us a cheaper option.

The sheets of metal were loose and banged in the breeze and in one part, there were islands of sand in one of the concrete basins forming those unnaturally blue lagoons that allowed me to get a lot closer to one of those delightful huts in the centre.

There was a young couple on the dusty shores of one of the lagoons who were probably confused by my childlike glee at being in this half-destroyed place. If I was inclined towards forming relationships, I'd be mega impressed if my boyfriend took me somewhere as beautiful and fun to rummage around as Steetly on such a glorious day.

Looking back at this got me imagining that this world is falling down around us and there's nothing that we can do. Let's not be glum and all sing a happy song together as the walls crumble...for that reason, I'm going to tell my report with fragments of songs in a way that only I could! I normally only sing when others start it or because I'm being stupid. If I'm singing to myself and there's no one to be silly with, chances are I'm afraid/something's wrong. However, song lyric games are fun to me so let's go!

"It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine." I felt great-was a nice sunny day. I thought that it would be awesome if you could come back to this ledge with a full moon behind you and do a werewolf pose pic!

"we're gonna dive into the emptiness, we'll be swimming"...I actually don't recommend that unless you really want to mutate.

"I know it's the last day on Earth, we'll be together as the planet dies"...I wonder if that's what the young couple were thinking as they sat to the right of me? No, more like "what's that weird freak doing skipping across the sand islands and why is she always so jolly?"

"The world is coming down, see the signs they're all around, all around"...the first sign of impending end times may just be that everyone's brain is shrivelled, giving rise to such sins of spelling like this:

"Sing this corrosion to me"...the interior of a tank. God knows what we crawled through to poke around in here but me and Skin reckon we're best off not thinking about it.

"I don't care if you're going nowhere, just take good care of the world"...the council here obviously don't sing from that hymn sheet here if they're leaving a lake of oil. We were both fascinated and horrified by the gloopy stuff. It was suggested that it is shocking that no one had set it alight. I could just imagine the local chavs making Hartlepool's biggest bonfire, gathering around it and being ready to attack anyone like a real wasteland gang.

"I'm a late 20th century, post-modern refugee"...don't know if this toy was made pre-2000 but it's the only lyric I could think of that fit the theme. Anyways, here's a sumo wrestler on the wastelands.

I'm unable to put a lyric to this but I've posted it simply to ask what the heck "WOT DUN THA DOG THE VANES" actually means in English...anyone?

This has taken me a while to put song and picture together but was so much fun to do!
"Mad dogs were just mad and the woolen numbness of anaesthesia."

I'll be cheeky and stick my pics on here!

Been here many times before, and have many times sworn that I would rather eat my own feet than come back, but the company was good and there was some digging for bottles to be had at the bottom of the site. Most of the work had been done for us by people with mini diggers beforehand (there was a mini gold rush when someone found a relatively valuable bottle, and the next weekend everyone and their dog was there, digging potholes all over the place).

For whatever reason (possibly coming home with armfuls of old bottles) I might actually do this again in the future...
