Arrow Royal Military Academy, Woolwich > 2007

The Royal Military Academy (RMA) at Woolwich, in south-east London, was a British Army military academy for the training of commissioned officers of the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers. It later also trained officers of the Royal Corps of Signals and other technical corps.

The RMA was founded in 1741. It was intended to provide an education and produce "good officers of Artillery and perfect Engineers". RMA Woolwich was commonly known as "The Shop" because its first building was a converted workshop of the Woolwich Arsenal.

A second academy, known as the Royal Military College (RMC), was opened at Sandhurst, Berkshire in 1799 to train officers for the infantry and cavalry.

Both were closed at the start of the Second World War in 1939. The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst opened in 1947 as an amalgamation of both institutions.

The Royal Military Academy is a collection of Grade II* and Grade II listed buildings and a local landmark for Woolwich.

This site has been empty for many years and while some parts, such as the Chapel, were still in use until fairly recently, the majority of the Grade II and Grade II* listed buildings have fallen into disrepair.

The Durkan Group acquired the Royal Military Academy earlier this year and with a comprehensive project team onboard, we are now working on conversion proposals for these historical buildings. They will be submitting a planning application to the London Borough of Greenwich in due course.

Please excuse the pictures, shot with film.

The Academy is going to be fixed up and be used at the London 2012 Olympics for shooting events.

Don't think I've seen this place before!
Interesting fact about it being used for the Olympics 2012.
    I shall look out
