Arrow 2 Culverts On Swinnel Brook, Haslingden, Rossendale, Lancashire - June 2009

Decided this evening to have a trip to Haslingden to look for some culverts.

The map said that there was 2 on Swinnel Brook.

I found Number 1 culvert not long after wading upriver.

This one was around 196Metres long

A mixture of designs (stone arch and stone with concrete roof).

I've named this first culvert "Twistier Blunders"

    The Pics

Around 50Metres upstream was another Culvert.

This took the Brook under St Crispin Way.

This Culvert was around 228Metres long.

A lovely stone arch section, then a straight backbreaking concrete part.

I ended up in a locked yard of a chemical place, so had to go back through to get out of the Brook

if this is to be named, i'll call it "Crispy Twains".

Third from last picture is awesome, and the darker version is quite atmospheric :-)

Culverts and concrete drains are one of the few things that don't seem to exist in Hull we have drains but almost all of them are very tiny (Mouse sized) or open aired (like man made tributaries). I guess its because of the proximitry to rivers and estuary as well as the fact the whole area was a swamp until a couple of hundred of years ago. I could see concrete drains and such being a pain in the ass to deal with logistically considering how much ground water there is here.

EDIT: Ironically I just read the local news rag's site and found out that Beverly Road as flooded because of a burst water main. Its 2 years to the day since the big floods that last swept Hull :-P

    Thanks Ice

on that pic, it looks quite large, but it was only around 5foot in height (not good if you're tall)

somebody on 28 said in one of my reports..
"would love to do something like this, but there's nowhere in Hull "

i looked on the map thinking there must be something he's missed and i remember i went a good way following rivers before i found anything that resembled a culvert and that wasn't very long (125ish metres if i remember right).
forgot the name of the area i eventually found one.

Interesting stuffage on Hull being a swamp once..
never knew that, think i'll put it in the "What have you learned today" thread
