Arrow Bridge Valley Road Deep Shelter, Bristol - Aug 2008

While this was open visited with many people including Sinnerman, Silverstealth and Zippy. I think this was the first visit with Scotty & someone who doesn't like me too much these days. Can't blame her really though.

Bridge Valley Deep Shelter started out life as a railway tunnel for the ill fated Bristol Port and Pier Railway which ran up to just under the Clifton Suspension Bridge. In the 1930's the railway was removed due to expansion of what is now the busy A4 portway road into Bristol. The tunnel remained disused till the advent of the 2nd world war when it, along with the Clifton Rocks Railway tunnel, became used as a air raid shelter. Later in life it became used, in part, by the Bristol handgun club. When new handgun laws came into effect in the club ceased and the tunnel has remained dormant every since.

That's awsome. Love that Electrolux vac, we had one exactly like that when I was a kid.

    Nice.

Nice pictures Scott, given the amount of times I was in there you'd think I'd have managed a decent set

Yeah it is, likely to stay as it is for many years to come as the main road above goes right over it.

I'm sure there is a lot of other shelters in Bristol, just not sure where to start.

yeah there must be i thought the same about Cardiff but of the two ive found one is back filled and capped with a concrete slab and the other is roughly where the Welsh Office annexe was built in the 70's so its long gone.

Nice pics, looks like a nice dry place for a mooch around, very unusual internally though, structure inside stucture!
Check out the local oap homes ask the residents their memories of shelters? worth a try!
