The Winchelsea caves are situated at the bottom of a chalk quarry which was excavated in the early 1900s to provide building materials for the construction of Dover's Admiralty Harbour. At the start of WW2 two long tunnels were dug to give extra access and shelter. The earlier caves were used until recently by an engineering firm, but when they moved on the caves were abandoned. The two long tunnels were bricked up and their access blocked.
