Arrow The Great Well tunnel Dover 21/08/2010 (mini report)

Right not much i can say about this tunnel it has some war time graphiti so im assuming it was used as a shelter or was used by ww2 personel .The tunnel it self is self has brick lined and unlined sections leading down the the well,it goes up a fair way to what looks like a wooden cap at the top and the sound of generators can be heard, someone said they thought dumpy was above the shaft but we really dont know! right not many pics as it is just a tunnel leading to the well shaft!
Right starting from the well shaft itself and walking back to entrance heres the few pics i got, special thx to frosty for leaning over the shaft with my camera to get the pics and also for the cave spider shot!

And one of frostys spider..im calling him egor

Right after that i did a return trip to st margarets so frosty obs and knox could get up the rope where the beach level is even higher pretty soonyou wont need to climb atall!

It leads up to Casement level of the castle. I don't think it was used as a shelter because the Capel caves part of the Esplanade tunnels is right next door on the right, the Guilford tunnel entrance is on the left, it's too narrow, it only has one entrance and it would have been buried by the soil heap from the digging of Dumpy which was chucked out over the side of the cliff. The original entrance was extended outwards where the WW2 sections stand so as to keep it open during this time, as it was used to carry power and comunication cables.

    Here's the fire brigade plan.

It is under Dumpy but the well goes right through it to Casement Level.A house once stood near the original entrance of the tunnel, and when it was extended the outside wall was used as part of the tunnel. the house was burried by the spoil from the Dumpy excavations but you can still see its toilet through a gap in the tunnel's metalwork and through the original toilet window. the frame still has the sash rollers in it too.
