Arrow Greenway Railway Tunnel | Galmpton, Paignton, Devon | Spring 2010

Greenway Estate is near Paignton, Devon and has been an important property for 500 years standing at a crossing point of the river Dart. Full history at National Trust HERE

As the railway approached Greenway House in the late 1800's, a link was needed through the estate to reach the ferry. The owner at the time had fought a proposal for a railway to run across his land down to Greenway Quay from where passengers could travel on to Dartmouth by boat. A compromise was agreed though, with the building of the 495 yard Greenway tunnel that runs under Greenway, and today transports tourists along the steam railway from Paignton to Kingswear.
My camera phone is what it is, I'm sorry, and when I can of course I'll update it, for now though I hope you find the pic's interesting at least, as I couldn't find anything on this tunnel in the searches.

Approach to the tunnel from the Paignton end...

Looking back to the Paignton end...

Soot covered lightbulbs from the steam trains...

Poor shot of the top of a refuge arch...

    Looking towards the Kingswear end...

Cheers boxfrenzy, its only "scheduled" live April to October and usually just steam trains (which you can hear a mile off!), but the Orient Express goes through a couple of times a year as well.

ERNIE99_UK, Its the Dartmouth steam railway, further west near Torbay: http://www.dartmouthrailriver.co.uk

I advise that you are VERY careful when visiting, the tunnel is still used by the steam railway

Cheers dude, but I'd advise for legal/health & safety reasons that absolutely NO-ONE ever visits it!
Watching them chuff their way past Goodrington beach every Summer for decades has educated me on how busy it can be
