    Arrow AWRE Orford Ness 11/09/10

Orford ness, possibly one of the bleakest places you will ever visit in your life, in world war 1 this place was used to test bombs on its famous bombing range, in world war 2 it also tested bombs and become the home of radar but its most famouly known for its role during the cold war. The Atomic Weapons Research Establishment (AWRE) tested nuclear weapons here such as Blue Danube ( I think we all know a certain someone on here who has some fame with this bomb).

Anyway history aside time for some pictures of this place on my new camera, most of the buildings in these pictures of from the AWRE occupation.

Visited with Tankman ( now known as Blue Danube )

Fencing around the site has been taken out along with the barbed wire with just the posts and gates left

Known as the million pound scrapeyard, this is where the national trust ( who now own the site) dump all the scrap metal they cant reuse etc

    Macro

An experimental rocket projectile range from just after world war 2

This shot really shows the bleakness of the place

This was a coast guard building built in the late 1800's, the top balcony was used by the observer corps in world war 2

Remains of the mini railway the ran around the site to transport personall around

An original A- bomb like the ones that would have been experimented on here bought back by the national trust

Now to the cool stuff, this is laboratory 1

    Buttons

The inside of laboratory 1, if you look over to the far right you can see a nice green flour but look closer.... yes thats right its water! apparently its about 20 foot deep

Next we have the pagodas, or labs 4 and 5

    roof area

    switch board type device

    Inside of the lab

    The 2nd pagoda

    Finish on a arty shot

We visited on a National trust tour thus why we were only allowed in certain buildings but you should go through them to see this place, to really see this place in all its might you should see it through your own eyes
