Default Mundesley Clifftop Fortified Defence Structure- Norfolk- June 2010

Whilst searching for ROC posts (we were heading to Mundesley one) my mate James decided he wanted me to turn off just past that big old hotel which is being done up as flats...

On arrival to the clifftop carpark, I was pleasently suprised.

However, I apologise for the poor quality photos once again- this is because it's from the video footage on the worse of my 2 cameras.

What we have here is some sort of Battery structure.

It has 2 protruding sections heading towards the cliff edge, which were linked together by a stepped section.

There are one of 2 small embrasures in the side- as displayed in the above photo.

The 2 protruding ends have bolts forming a circle, as if they were to mount something to, such as a large gun.

However, we were disappointed when we found out that this place is gonna be a Reccy...
Both main doorways have been BLOCKED by thick railway sleepers.

Apparently inside is hollow, but I'm not sure what would have been kept in here.

    Any suggestions?!

Well, considering the size of it, and the fact it's adjacent to a tourist destination carpark, I'm suprised nothing has been written about it!

I can't find ANY info on it.

And i dont know anyone else who fancies Reccy'ing it.

Thats Mundesley's WW2 coastal gun battery

The battery was built in 1941 and is the best surviving example of its type in Norfolk. Two 6 inch guns were mounted on the octagonal concrete platforms and were linked at the back by a range of underground stores and shelters.
The buildings to the left and right of the battery originally had searchlights mounted on top

I was there was about a year ago, the top of the wooden entrance is left partially open as bats roost in the gun plotting room.
The old hotel is something of a mystery Several people bought the flats but the conversions were never completed. The builder went bust! Hence the bad condition of the place that looks like as if its abandoned in places! Weird people live in there who give you strange looks if you hang around too long

    Woowwwww thanks tank man!

    Thats really helpful.
Yeah- some of the other buildings remain nearby.

So they've blocked it up because they want it to be a bat cave?

    meh :-/

    But yeah- that hotel.
    Drugs ruined it apparently.
My grandad remembers it, and he remembers picking one of my aunties up there years ago in the pouring rain.
I dont intend to go inside the hotel, but its interesting to know why it's STILL abandoned.
So the flats never got finished, but it's still inhabited...
    interesting.

Bacton... yes...i bet you were also fascinated by the gas plant, ay :-D

and the hotel is hard to miss- it's part of Mundesley's skyline!

Sculthorpe, is actually my first report, but I thoughtI'd write this up as my second, seeing as NO-ONE had wrote anything about it!

Nice to see that Tank-man knows what I'm on about though!

Happened to a few pillboxes & minewatch posts down this way, I think its a good idea for some of the smaller places to be honest, at least they'll stay preserved and won't get trashed/demolished/graff'ed

...be good to have a mooch around those underground stores though, but on second thoughts bat poo stinks so maybe not!
