1991 closure
The post is alongside a minor road just off the A66 east of Keswick.
Externally the post is in good condition. The six sided compound fencing that subbrit found is no longer there. There is an aircraft observation building with the post constructed of local stone. It is now used as a chicken shed. The steps to reach the upper storey didn't seem to be around.
This post was on subbrit as being welded, so it was going to be an external photos job for today. Imagine my surprise when I pulled the car up and saw rocks on top of the hatch... perhaps we were going to be lucky.
We were...
Internally quite a lot of items remain including the siren box, a pick, jerry can, matresses, chairs, the local paper (house prices were cheap in 1991) etc, There is also a lot of paperwork in the post, some of it quite disturbing- what happened on 24/06/1991?
